Building the frames

Structural timber frames are usually either in Oak or Douglas fir. The carpenter uses traditional scribe techniques and a variety of specialist tools to cut the joints in the workshop. When building a structural timber frame of this nature, 90% of the work is done in the workshop. A small frame will then be erected in a day and a large frame can be as little as a few days with a crane. There is also the possibility of having the carpentry done on a CNC machine for projects on a lesser budget and short time scale.

Face applied glazing (direct glazing) is the industry standard for glazing a green oak frame. The faced applied glazing method used is a dry glazed one, which means no silicon or mastics with drainage built into the system. Not only is this more environmentally friendly but is also extends the life for the glazed units.
